@nbcnews: As YouTube is becoming a staple in the classroom, schools and parents are having a hard time controlling how students are using it. In a first-of-its-kind analysis, NBC News found out how students are drawn to a platform that keeps them scrolling. NBC News' Tyler Kingkade reports.
Get rid of Chromebooks! Go back to books, paper and pencil!

now lets not scare parents here, youtube replaced the old vhs tapes and rolling out the tv, theyre using youtube to introduce a topic feom a new perspective before jumping into the lesson, or leaving longer informational class style videos for subs.

School day is too long, class size is too large. Teachers and students are exhausted. Listen to teachers.

As a teacher, I only use videos as a reinforcement. But, for the people in the comments saying “just make kids write on paper!!!” Please know that many people only get one pack of paper a year. For their entire class. I’m asked to use a print shop that could take up to a week to get 150 copies to me. Sometimes, a video just works better while kids are in seats. No solution is perfect.

We have 1:1 devices. A student has never watched a YouTube video in my class unless specially allowed (video for class). It's called classroom management. If a student even tries to go on something not class related I immediately shut their device down.

What did you think was going to happen when you give a child their own device to have all day everyday? The district firewalls cannot keep up, the kids constantly find ways around them. Teachers cannot possibly monitor all students devices at the same time, and teach.

Ok so what you do is hire a IT tech and have them Develop a district intra net, and stop letting kids on the internet while at school.

It is easy to say “no Chromebooks” but the real teachers know it’s not that simple. We literally don’t have the funding for PAPER. WE LITERALLY ARE LIMITED ON HOW MUCH PAPER WE CAN USE A MONTH. It is miserable. I have to plan around my paper limit. I have 140 middle school students. They’ve blocked youtube yet they still find a way to go on it. They insert it onto a Google slide as a video and it works. It is not as simple as “just use paper and a pencil”.

My district blocked YT on Chromebooks and it has not changed one thing. It didn’t do shit for kids who still uses their phone (regardless of the ban) (like me), now the kids that follow the policy only got punished bc they can’t watch YT during free time.

They probably won’t listen if they talk, so instead of repeating stuff they can rewind lol
