@jaycub_1292: Someone with ADHD who is very self-aware often has a story that looks like this: You were born with extreme impulses and great amounts of energy that often wired you to leap before looking. This may have gotten you into trouble when you were simply being your natural self. You may even have a past of chronic trauma and rejection as a result of your others judging your natural impulses. So, in order to compensate, you learned to suppress this energy and lock it inside a box of analytical thought, stretching the space between thought and action, emotion and expression. You also learned to rationalize thoughts within your own head so that your emotional intensity could feel less overwhelming. You became a master of identifying patterns, both within yourself and in understanding why others may or may not do certain things. By constantly wrestling with the beast of your impulses, you felt you had no choice but to become a master of analytical thinking. This, of course, can make you appear stoic. It can also make you successful in many ways, especially if your job involves analytical thinking. However, you may not even realize how much effort, cognitive work, and hyperactivity are going on inside your own mind. Others might be baffled if they truly understood just how much work goes on inside your head. As i became self aware i catch myself doing certain things and im like damn i really got ts. The other day i was having a conversation and i naturally lost attention and looked away for a bit and the other person took it as a cue to end the convo.. i felt bad but it’s good to know what type of shit i do ‘wrong’ in a way

Yes. Then, being so self-aware is its own separate curse too.

"Firmly corrected" is wild work my dude, Let's be honest Boomers tried to beat the ADHD out of a lot of us as children. But your point stands.

So self aware my therapist doesnt even talk most of my sessions, they just let me talk as I just unpack and identify my own problems on my own without him needed to say a word other than when I start spiraling...

I feel like this when it comes to being disrespected, I feel like I don’t know when it’s the right time to get upset because a lot of things that people get upset about don’t bother me but I’m seen as weird for not having the usual reaction to said disrespect.

It’s a blessing and a curse. When you see something in yourself that you need to change but you can’t bring yourself to actually go through with the change is SUCH torture. We always eventually get there though!

At 51 I accidentally over correct with letting things slide while I'm clocking things 360 continuously at work. My tech is older than me yet he was abused before I took him in. He's finally sending me pics of property issues and I'm so proud.

I spent a lot of years trying to negotiate away people's rejection of me. It was an excuse to them. it was a challenge to me. and then I would over share and scare away people. Now I say very little to most people and found some peace not over-extending.

I’m literally one of the very, very few people in my WHOLE group of friends that hasn’t touched alcohol, weed, cigarettes, or substances. My mom struggled with alcohol problems when I was in highschool, and my dad had a smoking addiction for about 15 years of my life. I think that in part with my fear of failure and rejection has kept me far away from anything close to those things

Huh. This video unlocked memories of being a kid and adults yelling at me for making noises and tapping on things. As an adult I still tap on things but I’ll catch myself instantly and not doing it anymore becomes my main concern.

Facts. No one sees the years of impulse negotiation, just so I can have something as simple as a regular conversation
