@irg.data.centers: A year ago, if we brought up natural gas on a data center site, we heard: "Gas explodes." "Grid only." "Behind-the-meter power isn't viable." Today, almost every site that comes across our desk asks the same thing first: can you pair it with BTM natural gas? What changed wasn't the gas. It was the wait. Interconnection queues in many markets now stretch for years, and AI load won't wait that long. On-site gas became the fastest way to get firm power to a campus, either as primary supply or as a bridge until the grid catches up. The scale of the shift is large. BloombergNEF counted about 2 GW of on-site gas running at data centers worldwide earlier this year, and about 114 GW planned. Critics still have fair points: • Not everything planned gets built. Turbines are back-ordered and financing is tight. • On-site gas exposes operators to fuel price swings. • Emissions and air permits are real questions for the communities hosting these plants. So "gas or no gas" is the wrong question for a site. The useful questions are whether there's pipeline capacity, whether it can be permitted, and what the plan is for when the grid arrives. What's driving your BTM decisions right now: speed, cost, or reliability? #DataCenters #BehindTheMeter #NaturalGas #PowerInfrastructure #SiteSelection
