A Guatemalan man has been sentenced to 30 years in US federal prison for his role in a human-smuggling operation that ended with 53 migrants dead and 11 injured in San Antonio, Texas, in 2022. Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco, 39, received the sentence on October 20. According to the US Justice Department, he helped arrange transportation and accommodations for migrants traveling from Guatemala through Mexico and into the United States. On June 27, 2022, authorities discovered a tractor-trailer carrying 64 people in San Antonio. Investigators determined that it had traveled approximately 156 miles from Laredo in temperatures around 90°F, without functioning air conditioning in the trailer. Forty-eight people were pronounced dead at the scene. Five more later died in hospital, bringing the death toll to 53. Prosecutors said Miranda-Orozco directly arranged the journeys of three Guatemalans aboard the trailer: two died and one survived with serious injuries. He was arrested in Guatemala in August 2024, extradited to the United States in March 2025, and pleaded guilty on July 2 to conspiracy and aiding-and-abetting offenses involving migrant smuggling resulting in death and serious bodily injury. Miranda-Orozco was not the truck’s driver. Other defendants in the case have received separate sentences, while additional sentencing proceedings remain pending.
