It’s unfortunate that this continues to be an unregulated industry. $$$.

In my state they have a number of supposedly sober housing that are total money scams. They get funding from the state, they bring people in on intake (often fresh out of rehab) they have to pass a *rug test and pay first month rent for a room, shared kitchen and bathroom. They say they *rug test 2x a month and numerous random tests, if they test positive it’s immediate eviction, no refund on rent. They tell them they have to attend facility group sober meetings, They don’t monitor group meeting attendance, they test at first … then stop testing. As soon as they see signs someone is relapsing they wait until they have paid their rent, then do a supposed random test and immediately kick them out, they clean their room out and though they are supposed to give them 30 days to pick up their belongings, not much is there because the manager keeps or give others their belongings. They also re-rent the room within several days thereby double dipping on the rent monies from the state and the person.

I went to rehab for alcohol use in my 20s, but there were people there who were having issues with all kinds of substances, and a fair amount of people found a way to get drugs in even though they searched your stuff when you arrived. Unfortunately people with substance use problems are resourceful and high risk. The guy overseeing this place sounds like he has a rough history but this could happen at any facility, unfortunately.

People like the narrative of an addict originating these places because they have “been there,” but it’s clear they’re way too close to the issue. Seems like such places are chronically mismanaged.

Hey Brian, you should continue investigating these programs. Many of us are familiar with what is actually going on in these programs, but a lot of parents are not. I would love for you to dive in to an investigative story about these facilities and how they commit fraud against insurance companies by paying drug addicts to come in and use insurance and then leave.. they call them “body brokers.” They actually pay these kids and give them drugs to go in and use their parents insurance to pay for the entire month and then they put them up in hotels and give them drugs.

The sober houses are a total scam. They pray on addicts and the families of addicts. I was swindled out of $50,000 for two months of treatment for my daughter who came out to continue to use. While she was in this ridiculous fake program they turned her against me. Keep investigating uncover more. It's a sick business.
