@mollypelletier.rd: Instead of asking whether your stomach acid is high or low, ask what is sending reflux up in the first place. The acid is what burns, but three things decide whether it gets up there and how strongly you feel it: 1. Your anatomy. The valve between your stomach and esophagus (the lower esophageal sphincter) can be weakened, and a hiatal hernia can make that worse. Ask your GI whether you have one. 2. Your habits. How much you eat, when you eat, and smoking can all add pressure on that valve. Pick one habit to change first. 3. Your nervous system. Stress changes how strongly you feel reflux. In a study of 192 PPI non-responders, people whose reflux testing was normal still had worse symptoms when they had more psychosocial distress and a lower quality of life. Add one daily nervous system practice. A PPI lowers how acidic your reflux is. It does not change any of these three, which is why many people still have symptoms while taking one.
