A South African woman has given heartbreaking testimony about the day her own husband allegedly shot her in the face during a horrific family killing spree. Adélle Bouwer, 46, testified in the Palm Ridge High Court against her estranged husband, Anton Bouwer, 55, who stands accused of murdering four people on 22 January 2024. According to the prosecution, Anton first shot and killed his parents, Bettie, 73, and Robert Barry Bouwer, 78, at their smallholding in Bredell, Kempton Park. He then allegedly returned to the family property in Benoni, where Adélle's 22-year-old daughter, Natasha Bouwer, and their domestic worker, Elizabeth Mahlangu, 55, were also shot dead. But perhaps one of the most chilling details is how this nightmare apparently began like any other ordinary morning. Adélle testified that her husband brought her coffee and even kissed her goodbye. Just hours later, after receiving an excited phone call from Natasha asking her to come home for a surprise, Adélle walked into her daughter's bedroom. But there was no happy surprise waiting for her. Instead, according to her testimony, Anton put his arm around her, raised a revolver and shot her directly in the face. Imagine that for a moment. The very person who kissed you goodbye that morning, someone you should have been able to trust, allegedly becoming the person who nearly ended your life. And as if being shot in the face wasn't horrifying enough, Adélle testified that her ordeal was far from over. Despite suffering devastating injuries to her jaw and teeth, she desperately tried to escape. But according to her testimony, Anton chased her outside, overpowered her and repeatedly struck her head with the revolver. Somehow, this woman found the strength to fight for her life and eventually managed to escape through a bedroom window to seek help. Prosecutors also allege that Anton attempted to make the killings look like an armed robbery, even shooting himself in the face to support his version of events. Now, just think about the cruelty alleged in this case. Four people dead, including his own elderly parents and a young woman of just 22, while Adélle was left with physical injuries and emotional scars that may never fully heal. And what makes this even more heartbreaking is that these weren't strangers caught up in some random act of violence. These were people who should have been safe in their own homes, surrounded by family. A morning that began with coffee, a kiss and ordinary family plans ended in absolute devastation. Anton has not been convicted, and the allegations must still be tested in court.
