BULLION PLAZA SCHOOL — Miami, Arizona They built it in 1923 for $128,949. A beautiful school — two stories, Neo-Classical, designed by famous architects. And from the day it opened, it had one purpose: keep the Mexican children separate. The superintendent said it plainly. He used intelligence tests to "prove" Mexican-American children couldn't master real subjects, so Bullion Plaza was equipped for industrial and home-making courses — training for the mines and for service. The written assumption was that these kids would quit after sixth grade and go into unskilled labor. Their fathers worked those same copper mines for 60 cents on the Anglo dollar, and paid bribes to foremen just to keep their jobs. Inside that beautiful building, the rule was English only. And it was enforced on children's bodies. The museum standing there today says it in its own words: "A system of physical punishment was used on students who forgot the 'English only' rule... a trip to the principal's office for a paddling for speaking Spanish." Paddled. For speaking the language of their own homes. Alfredo Gutierrez sat in those classrooms. He later became an Arizona state senator. He remembered teachers taping children's mouths shut for speaking Spanish. He remembered the names being taken — Alfredo became Alfred. Maria became Mary. The sorting ran by skin: light-skinned, English-fluent Mexican children could attend the Anglo school across town. The rest stayed at Bullion Plaza. It wasn't only the school. In Miami, Mexican and Apache children could swim in the public pool on Fridays only — right before the town drained it. And in 1932, fathers were deported out of that town. Gutierrez's father, a U.S. citizen, was one of them. The local newspaper never reported on any of it. Most of the school board's segregation-era minutes don't survive. The silence is part of the record. In 1951, two tenured Black teachers in the district, Daisy Moore and Marietta Bryant, were fired for racial reasons. They sued, won twice, and were reinstated with back pay. Bryant spent the rest of her career teaching penmanship at Bullion Plaza. The school stayed segregated into the 1950s. It closed in 1994. Today it's a museum — and to its credit, the museum tells this history straight, inside its own walls, in its own words. Now the ghost shows come. Ghost Adventures filmed there. Tour companies sell overnight investigations. They'll tell you about a man who fell down the stairs, a punishment closet with dark energy, children taken to the basement who never came back. None of it has a name, a date, or a document. We searched the record: there is no documented death at Bullion Plaza School. Not one. The TV synopsis claims "horrendous child abuse took place" — and on that single point, the paperwork agrees with the ghost show. Children were hurt there. By the staff. In daylight. As policy. But Bullion Plaza's children were the lucky ones in that system. They went home at night. Imagine if they stayed. Carlisle Indian School, Pennsylvania — 186 children in the school cemetery. Chilocco, Oklahoma. Sherman, California. Phoenix Indian School, right here in Arizona. Kamloops, Canada — in 2021 the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc announced ground radar had found the remains of 215 children. The U.S. government has now documented at least 973 deaths across the boarding school system, and burial sites at 65 schools. They stayed overnight. For years. Some of them forever. The ghosts were never the horror. The paperwork was. #BullionPlaza #MiamiArizona #BoardingSchools #NativeAmericanHistory #MexicanAmericanHistory
