These marriages look so scary and dysfunctional to me

My 60yo mother just cannot comprehend why she would need access to money. She would always say "thats a mans job" and helplessly stand by and wait. My whole life she would get her pay and go straight home to hand it to my father. She absolutely refuses to learn a single "mans job" thing. The power is out? She sits and waits for her husband to return from work to fix it. Her car broke down? She pulls a cigarette and starts waiting in the middle of the road for him. She is so used to being able to just state what she wants and then he goes outand buys it that when I asked her what she would do when he dies before her, she looked at me shocked. It's mind boggling how bad it is

I know this isnt the point, but I find being that level of dependant so deeply unattractive. I can't understand why anyone would want that.

This is so dangerous. When he dies it is a very real possibility she will have no access to funds for bills, for a funeral, for anything. It makes handling the estate so much harder.

This fries me. My parents had a fairly traditional marriage after I was born, where Dad was the main breadwinner, but it was *their* money and she had just as much access to it. If Dad’s wallet had gotten stolen, they would have had hers. Trad Wife culture is about control.

I’ve always questioned this. Even if you marry a good man, what happens when he dies. Women live longer than men

I’ll never forget going to the bank with my grandmother and her friends to open their own bank accounts and teaching the housewives how to balance check books and take care of all the bills but keep a little for themselves. It really stuck with me for life. All of the women in my family that are married have “when shit hits the fan” money just in case that man drops dead or leaves you tomorrow! Always have your own!

My great aunt was like this. her husband took care of everything and she had no interest in knowing anything. when he died she was lost. didnt even know the company who insured their vehicles.

I have a close work friend who's mom is in her 70's and completely dependant on her husband, no financial literacy, etc. Her husband had a stroke a few years back and is now in a nursing home. My friend is now responsible for all of her parents' financial everything. It's a lot of added stress in her life.

I work in hospice. The number of older adults who have to dig for account numbers and passwords when their spouse gets sick is scary. I want to be with my husband, holding his hand if something goes sideways, not panicking about how I'm going to pay the electric bill

My grandmother was in a state of shock when my grandfather passed. He knew for years that he was dying, and he never helped catch her up to speed or taught her financial literacy. It was mind blowing. She didn’t know how to pay bills or anything. She didn’t know how to talk to contractors. My grandfather didn’t even set up anything regarding his death so she had to figure that all out too. She didn’t have to go through that trauma.

i see a lot of “SAHM” women and i am just shocked because it reminds me of 50’s housewives. like we have rights. why wouldn’t you want YOUR own money. i was raised in a dual income house so i always knew to be independent.

It blows my damn mind that people make it for decades with NO WAY to pay for things? I was only a stay at home mom for a few years but the moment that was decided I marched my husband into the bank to put me on the account. Like?? 😂

I live in a big city and never got my license because I didnt want to pay for something I wouldnt use yet. My mom was extremely angry about that fact, because she never managed to pass her driving exame and therefore is entirely dependent on my dad. Theyre not doing too bad, but theyre both elderly and if my dad dies first, shes going to be landlocked at homz

When I was a teen I worked in a store and a lady would always look for me when she came in. Her husband died and she didnt know how to write a checked. I would help her, show her where to record it in her pocket book and tell her she needed to go to the bank occasionally and get a print out of charges so we could make sure everything lined up. She was embarrassed about it, and for some insane reason trusted a teen girl to help her. I knew I would never allow that to happen to me.

As a nurse, I'm always so relieved when I get a good response to the awkward conversation of "before I declare him dead in the system, do you have access to money without his name on it? Because the accounts with solely his name will be locked until inheritance is sorted."

Please ladies, a man is not a plan. Even if he's the best man on Earth he can still die before you so your financial plan and its backup should never solely rest on a man.

What’s shocking to me is how literally ANYONE could walk around day to day and say, “I have no idea how our finances work and I’m ok with that!” Like….HOOOOOW. Just thinking of the possibility gives me anxiety.

I would be just as concerned if the roles were reversed. No one partner should be the sole knowledge keeper/gatekeeper of anyone thing. Financial literacy is so much more important, but I’ve heard of men not eating after their wife died because he literally never cooked anything. Both partners should be able to at least survive on their own without the other.
