@theprecolumbiangentleman: #greenscreen This is what the ancient Maya city of Tikal in Guatemala looks like using LiDAR. It’s a revolutionary tool that lets us see the objects and terrain under the jungle canopy and does a great job at exposing the structures as well. These images really bring the true city to light and are useful tools for archeologists and academics. Let’s take a tour of the city center called the Great Plaza. #precolumbian #maya #tikal #History

Thank you for the explanation on the complex. that’s very fascinating.. curious do you think they started out as too natural mounds on each side of the temple and then they built on those?

This is more of a park question. Staying in the lodge in a few months. Do you have to be with a guide in the park or is it open to wander? Are there hours that it is completely closed, even if you're literally staying in the park?

El Gran Jaguar. I did not know that Jasaw Ch'an K'awiil was buried there. He built Temple 1 and was responsible for so many new building projects after Mutal restored its power back from the K'aan takeover. I also didn't know that Temple 2 might be the burial place of his queen. Thank you. Isn't Lidar amazing for mapping the size of these sites and finding new sites?

it blew my mind when I learned that these locations were surrounded by sometimes miles of suburban sprawl and farms

Why were the pyramids constructed? - And than pyramids over pyramids? At the marketplace, were they trading goods or for exchange of money/ chocolate? I guess I assumed they were closed off from outsiders. I'm very curious to what the Mayan society was like. I assumed socialistic?

LiDAR is very cool cuz! You know it’s military tech that can and probably has mapped most sites but they won’t make them public
