@history.of.the.wo19: In January 1888, nineteen-year-old Kate Kampen gave birth to her first child alone in a freezing prairie cabin. Four days later, the devastating Children’s Blizzard struck. With no fuel, doctor, or nearby help, Kate held her newborn son, Henry, against her body to keep him warm. Meanwhile, her husband, Wilhelm, struggled through the blizzard while returning home with coal. After days of battling the storm, he survived by sheltering among pigs in a barn. When the winds finally stopped, Wilhelm made it home. Kate, her baby, and her husband had all survived. They went on to raise seven children and build a life together. Kate lived into her nineties, and her family continued passing down the story of that extraordinary first week. The Children’s Blizzard of January 12, 1888, killed hundreds of people across the Great Plains, including many schoolchildren caught unprepared by the sudden storm. Kate Kampen’s story reminds us that courage does not always happen in front of an audience. Sometimes, it is simply a young mother holding her child through the coldest nights, refusing to give up hope. Her name may not appear in history books, but the life she protected carried her story across generations.
