Existential psychologists would say that death anxiety is at the core of every form of anxiety, fear, and stress. But most people don't consciously know that. It's often after many questions and many sessions that people realize that their fear of being behind comes from the core conflict that there's not enough time to accomplish what they want, or that their desire to control others is driven by an attempt to keep them around longer. That is why it was surprising when for this week's podcast episode, I recorded a coaching session with 'Polly' and she talked about death anxiety from the get go. She was aware of all the ways in which she was trying to control her life and her family to ward off death. She was also aware that this was robbing her of the joy of motherhood. In the session, we tried to connect with her unconscious self and used multiple images to uncover what her soul was realy asking of her beyond all the external forms of control. What made the session even more rich was this week's guest, Charles Penot, a Jungian life coach who practiced as a commercial lawyer for 43 years before arriving at his true calling. When I worked in business development, I would often tag team with commercial lawyers on deals, so recording this episode just about a year after my corporate career wrapped up was special. This was a tag-team situation too, except we were covering concepts from depth psychology, Vedic philosophy, and mythopoetic men's work. What a joy! I know I sound a little too excited talking about death, but hear this one out and you'll realize why making peace with death is the most alive thing you can do.
