Microsoft has walked away from the data centre at Loughton in Essex, which ministers announced in 2025 as the largest UK sovereign AI datacentre. UK Power Networks has told the developer, Nscale, that it cannot supply enough electricity to the site until the 2030s, and Microsoft was the anchor tenant and the only publicly announced customer. So the flagship of Britain's AI strategy now has no power and nobody to sell to. When the Guardian visited in March the site was still a working scaffolding yard. Nscale is backed by Nvidia and hopes to float in New York at around 35 billion dollars, and Nick Clegg sits on its board with a stake that could be worth 88 million. We keep being sold these sheds as a national win. Ask what happens to the land when the tenant leaves.
