No technical necessity on a purely demo account you’re right about that. They have business reasons for choosing the rule, but holding a simulated trade overnight doesn’t itself require real margin or extra data fees.

Even on a live futures account which I have I can’t hold overnight… you need the capital to do it as margin requirements differ intraday from overnight…

Prop firms are no more of a scam than the regular stock market. If you know the rules and adapt you can extract a ton of money out of them. But if you’re that good at trading put your own money up
