"Why does someone with dementia seem like a different person in the evening?" "New caregivers, there's something you need to understand before you mistake confusion for bad behavior." One of the things new caregivers may encounter when caring for someone living with dementia is a change in behavior later in the day. A person who was peaceful during breakfast or enjoying a conversation in the afternoon may become restless, confused, frightened, or agitated as evening approaches. This pattern is often called sundowning. But here's something every caregiver should understand. Not everyone living with dementia experiences sundowning, and not every episode of evening confusion is caused by dementia. Some individuals may: Begin pacing or wandering. Repeatedly ask to go home. Become suspicious or frightened. Have difficulty recognizing familiar surroundings. Become restless, anxious, or irritable. Experience changes in their sleep patterns. What can caregivers do? Start by observing rather than immediately correcting. Keep the environment calm and familiar. Reduce unnecessary noise and confusion. Provide adequate lighting as daylight fades. Maintain consistent daily routines. Check whether the person is hungry, thirsty, uncomfortable, tired, or needs to use the bathroom. And remember, sudden or significant changes in confusion or behavior should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Pain, infections, medication effects, and other medical conditions can sometimes cause similar symptoms. After 17 years in assisted living, one lesson I continue to share is this: Before responding to a behavior, try to understand what the person may be experiencing. Sometimes the most helpful thing a caregiver can offer is a calm voice, reassurance, and a familiar environment. Because when someone is confused, arguing with them may increase their distress. Education helps us respond with greater understanding, patience, and dignity. This is caregiver education, not a medical diagnosis. Experienced caregivers: Have you cared for someone who became more confused or restless in the evening? New caregivers: Have you heard of sundowning before today? Let's share our experiences and help someone who may be encountering this for the first time.💜 #AlzheimersCaregiver #DementiaCare #FollowMeAcrossTheBridge #HealingForCaregivers #FamilyCaregiver
