I'm curious, why servers are responsible for walk outs, ever? Even if they're standing next to the table and the group gets up to leave there is nothing they can legally do other than call the police?

I think it's a huge liability for your business that you will put the responsibility of the servers to make sure that the customers pay their tab. If your servers catch someone trying to run out on their tab, what exactly did you expect them to do?

I agree 100%. As a former restaurant manager myself I have zero tolerance for restaurants where servers have no backups or support. Especially when you see the server working hard but behind and the rest of the staff is just chilling.

My old boss used to make us pay for unpaid tabs. One person on bar for the whole bar plus the dining room, full establishment. Because the boss was too drunk to be bothered to her job as an owner and boss.

As a server if I feel like someone is going to walk out I’m suppose to let my manger now. I had teens who were super polite and nice but then walked out when I went to use the restroom and I got written up for it
