@mckgaston: 🐿️ Acorns grow quick or die young! That’s the life of an oak! Recalcitrant seeds: do not tolerate desiccation (drying out) or freezing! Often these are seeds that have a high fat content. Ex: acorns 🌳, avocado 🥑 , and coconut 🥥 Orthodox seeds: tolerate desiccation and freezing, and many go dormant for a period. Often these are seeds that have a high carbohydrate and/or protein content. Ex: beans 🫘 , rice 🌾 , and pine 🌲 We call them orthodox seeds as they “follow the rules” we made up about seeds being able to be dried and stored. Orthodox seeds are found in temperate climates especially as annuals, but they are also found in tropical climates where they are pioneer species (like guava and cashew). Between Recalcitrant and Orthodox is Intermediate! Usually living about 1-2 years, they have mild desiccation tolerance and cold sensitivities. Ex: coffee ☕️, citrus 🍊, papaya 🤰🏼 Seeds are just baby plants, and like mature plants, they have environmental preferences too! #seedscience #botany #horticulture #acorns #recalcitrantseeds

All I hear is Kronk.

daveyfiacre :

Omg did you drown that bug in its acorn house 😳

MeanPinball :

Ok but when do they qualify as being alive, separate from the plant or tree? And when do they pass from life to death?

DayAtTheBlake :

I love oak trees, there’s so many places that they call home, all so different; California, Louisiana, England and more. I didn’t know a lot of these things about acorns, I’ve tried sprouting ones I’ve found around me but they never seem to take…. I was probably trying with dead ones. Do you know how I might find acorns that would be good candidates to propagate?

myopically :

According to many, I am a recalcitrant seed 😅

Darrius :

Ok Gaston, are you orthodox or recalcitrant? Guess that depends on the rule. How long does acorn flour last? I must go learn more!

izzycavazos :

You run fast🤩

jack :

are there any theories on why oak acorns (and seeds in Hawaii) developed so anomalously? are there any species in comparable climates, like China, that do the same thing?

Villainer :

I love a hint of an acorn!

Victorman :

Ok but did you pull the lever?

Garrett :

I’m on a couple of spectrums

Jakob Jardin :

It depends a lot on the species of oak. Some have barely any fat content at all.

Brother_in_Lore :

Ok escanor in the sunshine 😏😂
