THANK YOU for speaking about orthorexia!! It is not spoken about ENOUGH

My bestie was the person who did everything right food-wise. I was the trash panda who ate everything in sight. Cancer is just supremely irrational and indiscriminate.

I wish it wasn’t so many people’s first impulse to look for something to blame. How does making cancer our fault help anyone but people who haven’t had cancer yet?

illness isn't a moral failing. eating what your body needs isn't a moral failing.

My friend's little one was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at 3 and spending time on the children's oncology ward really drove home that cancer just happens. None of these kids were eating wrong or not exercising.

There's a lot of moralizing illness in the "healthy" living spaces. Unfortunately sometimes we're just unlucky, and there's not much we can do about it other than making the best out of a bad situation as you have done.

I have Crohn’s disease and psoriasis that started when I was two. I wish people could stop moralizing health, but I think when it costs some people so much, they do everything they can to not pay that price. I feel the same way about religion. People aren’t doing well because they did everything right and made good choices. It’s a lot of luck.

Yep. It all looks like poison. Lost so much wait initially with this fear. Plant, meat whatever. It’s the guilt and fear. Excelled topic. Thank you. ❤️

This is why the over focus on wellness / diet is dangerous. Anyone can get cancer, anyone can get sick.

Thank you for sharing (again!!). It’s so hard not to think the increases in BC cases are caused by something WE are doing. But if there was verifiable causation, we’d all be hearing it and it’d be shouted from the rooftops. I’m grateful my oncologist told me “eat what you can, when you can” and didn’t fear monger. We suffer so much already. And those cancer cells did not pick us based on something we did wrong. 💖

Very well said! I was always reading a new nutrition book in the waiting room of my mom's cancer docs... I was definitely heading down that path until someone explained orthorexia.

So important to speak on this. I’ve made such an effort to not become obsessed by healthy food and just do my best

Thankfully I didn’t have that issue, but I hadn’t even thought of that. I’m sorry you had to deal with orthorexia. I definitely struggled with the guilt and anger, and had lots of people try and give me input about my diet after I was diagnosed. Thankfully my onc and my family was supportive of my regular diet but it’s so sad people don’t have that support system.

Thankfully when I had cancer I was a kid and my mom kept me on the right track eating even though I didn’t want to eat anything. She believed fed is best and as long as I was eating something with some nutrients it was ok. I had a large portion of my stomach removed because it was dying and I’m trying very hard not to fall into that trap where I look and read very ingredient or very macro because otherwise I wouldn’t eat. I almost died because my stomach wasn’t healing where it met the small intestines and no one knew until I had a endoscopy in July but I thought I must be doing something wrong. My aunt died of uterine cancer 13 years ago but she put off the doctor until it spread throughout her body. My family still blames the Diet Coke she’d drink everyday, what killed her though was waiting over a year to go to the doctor. By the time she went, it was everywhere. She went to the er on the 4th, and passed on the 24th.
