He never stuck up for Emily when his mom treated her like shit! I like Richard but that always bothered me.

He talks about Emily, crying for months in her bed after Lorelei left, but doesn’t say a word about how he felt

Here is a non topic thought— the reason Lorelei didn’t know how to cook, even if it was a box mix was because her mother had cooks when she was growing up. Emily didn’t mix with the help and made sure Lorelei didn’t either, so Lorelei never saw the cooks creating a dish. Lorelai could make a perfect bed and run the Inns because Emily would remake the beds because the maids did not know how to do it properly and Lorelei saw this. Lorelei ran the Inns effortlessly and efficiently because she has seen Emily plan and run Emily’s numerous events and run the other organizations she was in. Therefore Lorelei couldn’t cook because her mother never cooked.

this is not true.. one of her favorite memories was a day she spent with her father... your take is so wrong

Richard is very self-centered. Half the time when he does stuff for the girls, it’s more for his own sake. Like when Strode bad mouths Lorelei, he straight up says “The Gilmore name was being attacked”. Not “You, my daughter, were being attacked”. He saw it as an attack against himself

I have thought this for years. This is why Emily did so well after Richard's death in a YITL

So much of Emily's hangups tie right back to Richard. She's so much more at ease in the episodes where he's out of town and there's generally less tension.

I love Gilmore Girls, but honestly, EVERYONE in that family was the problem. That's what's so fun about rewatching it every couple years-- each rewatch gives you a new object of your blame.

Richard is not a perfect husband and dad, and sometimes he was very strict but also Emily had her gulties!! He was protective with Rory because she is not rebel, she loves books and study and is very sweet. When Lorelei gradueted he was very proud and at the end he say to Lorelei she is a great person!

I always found it funny how he was so offended and angry Logan's parents thought Rory wasn't good for their family when he treated Dean with the exact same disgusting behavior earlier in the series. He only apologized because he was forced. Kinda told me everything I needed to know.

Interesting! I actually think she felt more warmth towards her dad as a child, which made his coldness and criticism more painful. She doesn't want to see him in the hospital because he "looks small." She is afraid of his mortality. She expects the worst from mom, so she's prepared for it and has built up defenses. That isn't the case with her dad.

I think he was also afraid of Lorelai, and of Rory in the beginning. He didn't know how to connect.

He valued colleague like respect and relationships. Which is why him and Rory got along. It was more of a mentor relationship than a grandfather/granddaughter relationship

He also liked Rory because she is an extreme people pleaser, and she made sure to always try to connect with him on things he was interested in

Don’t forget when they are split up and Rory wants them to meet with the parents 1:1 Lorelei chooses to have dinner with Emily and not Richard

I agree. Richard only wanted the family for the picture that it painted for the community they were in. He was a rich business man and only cared about status and what he had to do to keep it up. He expected Emily to run the home and raise Lorelai and he could just go to work and whatever charity functions he had to be involved in. Even at a lot of the family holidays they show, his business associates are there or he’s talking about business in some way not really paying attention to the family

As Emily herself said in AYITL - when she was able to shed her identity as Mrs Richard Gilmore after his death - she was free. She reclaimed her agency and identity. Oh, how I would love a prequel [Heartwarming]

Didn't Lorelei explain it very clearly in that episode. She wasn't afraid of her father, she couldn't look at him looking so small. She was afraid he was dying and she couldn't see him like that. Did you even watch the show?

I see Richard similarly to how I see Christopher. Richard is devoted to Emily and Lorelai is adjacent because of their connection. Just like how Christopher was interested in having a relationship with Lorelai and Rory is adjacent. Main difference is Richard respected family obligation
