@firstamherst: For decades, Buffalo’s grain was inspected and traded inside this building on South Elmwood. Today you can live in it. It went up in 1916 for Robertson-Cataract Electric, an electrical supply company that used it as a showroom and warehouse. Buffalo was busy wiring its homes for lights, stoves, and irons, and business was good. By 1920 the company had 175 employees and was one of the biggest electrical distributors between Boston and Chicago. Then the grain business moved in. The Corn Exchange used the building to inspect corn, wheat, and other grain headed to local mills, and ran a trading floor lined with big blackboards. The name stuck around a lot longer than the grain trade did. In 1932, the Corn Exchange’s own president warned that the St. Lawrence Seaway would hurt Buffalo. He was right. Once it opened in 1959, ships could sail past the city, and Buffalo’s grain shipments fell by more than half. In 2011, local developers Anthony Baynes and Kent Frey finally brought it back. The 1970s windows came out, the brick and terra cotta stayed, and the inside became 26 loft apartments. A year later it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Now it’s 100 South, and there’s one apartment available. Unit 405 is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath with almost 1,300 square feet, central air, hardwood floors, and a washer and dryer in the unit for $2,325/month. There’s underground parking too, which really comes in handy downtown. You’re a short walk from Canalside, the Theatre District, and Chippewa, and City Hall is your neighbor.
