I work for a MS specialist and she does a lumbar puncture and has to have 4 or more oligoclonal bands along with lesions.

I had over 2 years of symptoms, then saw a Physician Assistant. They sent me directly to a neurologist. I went through 4 months of - bloodwork, brain mri, cervical mri, failed lumbar puncture, guided lumbar puncture and my neurologist finally diagnosed me.

When I got diagnosed I only had an MRI no spinal tap. I was grateful I didn’t need a spinal tap but wonder why I never got one and the MRI was the only diagnostic test used.

My MS does not show up in MRIs, I insisted on the lumbar puncture and Ihad 8 bands so that along w my symptoms is how I was diagnosed. I now get the Ocrave blood test which says my MS is on the lower end of activity. There isn't one test for it and that's part of the issue. I may have micro axon damage which does not show up on the MRI. I also have Epstein Barr antibodies. My symptoms are extreme fatigue, dizziness and migraines, I also have trigeminal neuralgia and optic neuritis, I do not have mobility issues.

Maybe she has Mogad or NMO. They both mimic MS and it’s two different blood tests.

There are other diagnoses that show lesions on MRI. I was misdiagnosed with MS based on MRI, nystagmus, & other clinical symptoms. My lumbar puncture was negative but apparently you can have MS with neg LP. MD misdiagnosed

It’s really common after years of having MS for a neuro to say “well now we aren’t sure.” I lost my mind when they told me that and then I found out how common it is. I’m still on DMTs but in the “limbo” of waiting to see if it’s NMO. I’ve been in the limbo for 5 years. Still yearly MRIs 🙄🫠

I have 18 brain lesions spine. MRI was normal. Lumbar puncture was normal but my octave blood test was 3.5. I have a major majority of the symptoms. My former neurologist refused to move me from probable MS to MS even though every appointment he would say I’m probably going to diagnose you with MS based on what I’ve seen so far but refuses to do it because my MRI from a year ago to two months ago has not changed. I’m tired of being gaslit. I’ve been dealing with this since 2015. So I see a new neurologist that is well known next Tuesday.

Not 1 year is definitive. For example, my scans show white matter lesions in my brain and spine but they aren’t shaped like dawson’s fingers. Many things cause these like ischemia. I also have neuropathy, motor issues and fatigue. MS symptoms. But… I had an emergency aortic dissection 12 years ago and they blocked my subclavian artery (which causes ischemia and lesions). I have a rare genetic smooth muscle disorder ACTA 2 which can cause ischemia thus the neuropathy, lesions and motor issues. I’m in major beta blockers and other bp meds that cause extreme fatigue…like MS. So since there’s no definitive test for MS, they insist I have and but research and all history points to my other issues causing the symptoms. I can’t get a spinal tap because I have aneurysms in my brain and chest abd it would be life threatening. So even though they don’t know for sure, they diagnose me with MS. But I know my symptoms are from my other issues. This is how it gets misdiagnosed. One example. There’s no definitive test. They diagnose it by ruling out other causes. There’s room for error that way. Best wishes [Twin hearts]

I have a chronic demyelinating disorder of the CNS but the only lesion I had was at C3 and my LP didn't have the ogliocytes...so while I have symptoms they can't 100% diagnose MS. I get IVIG treatments to slow things but who knows. It's all so confusing

I didn’t do a lumbar puncture but I had 8 MRI’s a lot of blood drawn and on my six MRI I gain 2 new lesions I’m scared now I got diagnosed January 2026

and MRI in a lumbar puncture is the very first thing they did with me when they thought it was Ms then they thought it was Parkinson's now it's Lewy body dementia
