@history.hatched: In January 1947, the U.S. War Assets Administration disposed of approximately 20,000 pounds of surplus metallic sodium left over from World War II in Lake Lenore, Washington. Because the drums had deteriorated and commercial carriers considered them too dangerous to transport, the containers were rolled onto the frozen lake and punctured. The highly reactive sodium then came into contact with water, producing heat, hydrogen gas, and explosions. The lake was selected partly because its highly alkaline waters were described at the time as devoid of fish, although it later became a habitat for stocked Lahontan cutthroat trout. JC :
The military chose this lake because it already had a natural pH of 9.9 and wasn't hospitable to fish and most wildlife. The sodium dumped had very little effect on the environment.

They also thought Asbestos was considered a miracle material at that time so it’s not surprising.

so it's a dead Lake it's a dead Lake because it is a terminal Lake that means that it is a catchment and it has always been a catchment... this means that it has always caught run off and dirty water from the entire system around it. it was already highly polluted... sodium metal.. about 860,000 gallons would do little to change this... again it was a dead Lake.... and sodium would just dissolve in the water ... fun fact the pH increase by sodium metal reacting with water creates sodium hydroxide... however the sodium hydroxide reacted with acid rain over time and went back to its beginning pH.... so in essence acid rain change the conditions of the lake back to whatever they were which was still a dead Lake... because it's always been a dead lake... even though now it has some life in it

Yeah that make sodium hydroxide which is a strong base. Definitely polluting that lake.

Could have sold it high schools for science experimentation. I remember my h.s. Science teacher saying this would happen but I couldn’t picture it. Glad I lived long enough for YouTube to exist.

Compared to most other types of pollution this isn't that bad. It's basically the equivalent of dumping a bunch of baking soda in a lake.
