New Bill Would Pay U.S. Citizens $500,000 If Wrongfully Detained By ICE — Plus $100,000 For Each Additional Day A Democratic lawmaker wants the federal government to face substantial financial penalties when immigration officers unlawfully detain American citizens. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández of New Mexico introduced legislation that would allow eligible U.S. citizens to sue over arrests or detentions made without a warrant or probable cause. Under the proposal, successful claimants would receive: - $500,000 in damages for wrongful detention. - An additional $100,000 for each day held after the initial day. The legislation follows a ProPublica investigation identifying 506 U.S. citizens reportedly detained by immigration agents between January 2025 and September 2026. Not all those cases have been established as unlawful. “ICE does not get to trample on your rights and walk away without consequence,” Leger Fernández said. The bill would also prevent officers from using certain immunity defenses in qualifying lawsuits. DHS disputes allegations that its agents are arresting U.S. citizens, describing its enforcement operations as highly targeted. #ICE #Immigration #CivilRights #BreakingNews #fypシ゚viral
