Former Coach Gets $1.3 Million To Leave ASU After Hockey Player’s Collapse At Workout Arizona State University hockey coach Greg Powers is leaving the school. He will receive $1.3 million. The reported payout comes after player Matthew Mayich collapsed during an outdoor workout on Aug. 20. According to the report, Mayich has been hospitalized since then. Powers, 49, will be paid in three installments through August 2028. The total is 75% of the remaining money on his 2022 contract. It also includes $85,000 in bonuses the school said he earned but had not yet received. The first payment is $531,923.08 this year. The next two are $398,942.31 each, in August 2027 and August 2028. He will also be paid for 176 hours of accrued leave, after being put on paid leave in September. Powers also agreed to cooperate with the university and its legal team on any legal matters from his time at ASU. That includes any filing connected to Mayich’s collapse, according to a letter obtained by AZ Family. Attorney Pete Mayer told AZ Family that Powers’ contract protects both sides. He also said Powers could have been fired because of a contract phrase about “conduct affecting the university.” Mayich’s parents had a different view. They called the exit “more like a negotiated agreement than accountability.” They said they believe Justice Bales’s investigation must continue and its findings must be made public. Do you think this was the right way for ASU to handle it? #ASU #Sports #Matthew #hockey #Sun
