Your wife may become chronically ill. Your child may become chronically ill. You may go from husband and father to husband, father, and caregiver of the household. You never know what you are going to have to do for the ones you love. Leave “traditional gender roles” at the door. Do the dishes. Do the laundry. Give the medicine on a schedule. Know date of births, socials, allergies, and medication doses. If you aren’t prepared to put your wife and kid(s) happiness and wellbeing ahead of your own then don’t get married. Spare that woman a lot of heartache and disappointment later in life.

Anyone can sit with you in a cafe but not many will sit beside you in a hospital bed , choose a good partner you can grow old with .

if you like to golf/fish/go to the gym a lot. always come straight home and do the dishes, laundry, or clean. tell her, you just felt in the mood. they will catch and you will never have an argument over you hobby of choice.

Communication is key. You might not always agree on things but even if you get into an argument, come back and talk about it again once your emotions have settled down. Pride doesn’t help anyone in a relationship, so suck it up and apologize if one is warranted for your behavior, regardless of who is “right” about the argument. If a topic is difficult for someone, respect their boundaries, but if it’s something critical to your relationship - like finances or transparency - then work with your partner to find a way to discuss it in manner and time that works for both parties. Don’t spring things on them and expect everything will be peachy. Sometimes people need to process stuff or they might be stressed out/distracted and need time to come back to it. And for the love of all that is holy, never trash them or belittle them in front of others, even in a loving or teasing manner, and always take their side in an argument, even if they are wrong (you can discuss it in private later, but at that moment, you have your partner’s back). All of this applies to both parties; you both have to put in the effort to make it work and to communicate effectively.

The phrase “happy wife happy life” is an excuse to abuse and belittle you. We use “happy spouse happy house” because it implies we both are responsible for our own happiness. Oh 1 more. You are not responsible for fixing her bad behavior. She is. You’re there to support the ups and downs and to encourage her to keep trying her best. Don’t enable the behavior just because it hasn’t stopped yet. Teach, talk, and move forward. Holding onto that moment will only destroy you both. Remember it, but learn to forgive.

Marriage didn’t change a thing between my husband and I because we actually knew each other 100% before tying the knot. If you don’t rush into marriage and live with them first (even in separate rooms if you’re saving yourself for marriage) for at least 6 months then you won’t have any bad surprises after the wedding.

At 40, I’m probably getting a medical before I get seriously involved with anyone. I’ve been single for 7 years and would rather remain that way than drag someone into a situation a year or two into a relationship and end up alone, heartbroken, and also dealing with whatever has come up.
