Over the weekend, police were called on a 3-year-old Black boy at a youth soccer game in Winter Park, Florida. According to his family, other parents complained he had the ball too much. The league issued a trespass notice, and officers walked the family off the field in front of the kids. The reason police were called hasn’t been confirmed, but the family says it was because he was “too good.” Whatever the full story turns out to be, it fits a pattern Black Americans know well. Here’s the history behind it 🧵 1. Tall poppy syndrome. It’s the social tendency to cut down high achievers to enforce sameness. When it meets racism, Black excellence is often treated as a threat instead of something to celebrate. 2. White mediocrity as the standard. When “basic” is treated as the benchmark, everyone else has to be ten times better just to compete. That’s the logic behind the “confidence of a mediocre white man” idea. The social order depends on mediocrity being protected and excellence being questioned. 3. Weaponized whiteness isn’t new. Carolyn Bryant’s accusation against Emmett Till. Tulsa in 1921. The 1898 Wilmington coup against a duly elected biracial government. Racial laws written after Bacon’s Rebellion to divide poor Black and white laborers. Calling the police on Black people is a modern version of an old tool. 📚 Read more: Playing in the Dark by Toni Morrison on how American whiteness defined itself through Blackness The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein on how government policy segregated housing The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander on how drug policing differs by race #BlackTikTok #BlackHistory #Soccer #whitemediocrity
