The tardigrade, also called the water bear, is a microscopic eight-legged creature that shrivels into a dried husk when conditions turn hostile, dropping its metabolism to a near standstill. In September 2007, thousands rode on the outside of a European space capsule for nearly two weeks in hard vacuum, exposed to cosmic radiation.
