Yes oh my god. And can we stop adopting out aggressive dogs? Idc if its fear aggression, forward, or aggression from abuse. STOP ADOPTING OUT AGGRESSIVE DOGS.

Dare I say the kill shelters actually kill the animals that are dangerous and would stay in a no kill for years and years and have literally no quality of life because a no kill would refuse to do so

Hot take: they’re usually staffed by lovely people who want the best for all those animals. Sometimes “the best” just isn’t what you’re hoping for… 🤷

Animals with cronic health or behavioral problems do unfortunately need to be first on the list to go. There are not enough people and resources to help these animals. These animals unfortunately are neglected IF they get adopted out. I’ve seen it so many times.

I work at an open intake shelter- we are fucking drowning. Dogs and cats. I promise we don’t want to euthanize animals. We try SO hard. That decision goes through SO many people before it’s chosen.

Preach!! I worked at both open intake and a “no kill” shelter. Guess what happened at the no-kill shelter when we were completely full, every cage, every foster, literally nowhere to put a cat? We sent them to the open intake shelter. We had the ability to say no, the open intake shelter has to say yes.

Open intake shelters do SO MUCH for the community. Like as much as the concept of putting animals down due to overcrowding upsets me, I can’t help but support them. They offer free, no questions asked, intake for ALL animals. My local shelter also has low cost spay/neuter clinics, vouchers for vet care, a pet food pantry, live trap loans for TNR and pest removal, a found pet program, free microchipping events 2x a year, AND this thing called the “Angel Fund” that’s a donation-based fund for emergency care.

and i’ll add - “no kill shelters” also euthanize, it just has to be under a certain percent of their population

I just mostly wish they didn’t have to exist. I wish there was more funding for TNR and stricter laws around spay and neuter requirements. I wish there was a home for every animal and then they wouldn’t have to make that choice.

Unfortunately not all dogs will make good pets and we can’t save every dog. Sometimes it’s much better for all animals involved to euthanize

My county is huge and our county shelter has a 95% adoption rate. Good funding is everything.

i used to work at a "no kill" shelter, i left because of an extremely aggressive dog that only one person could handle being kept, and a cat so old and sick it was on 8 different medications and never moved. but just to keep a label that looks better, quality of life is ignored and space is taken up that could go to adoptable animals

Its been years so things could have changed but where I used to live there was an open intake shelter that had 3 over branches located throughout the county and surrounding counties and they would periodically trade animals that weren't having luck getting adopted to the other shelters so more people would have a chance of seeing them. I volunteered for a little bit at one of them and they did everything (and more) in their power to save those animals

I volunteered for a “no kill“ shelter. It was completely overrun and a hoarder situation. The county eventually shut it down and we had to euthanize 95% of the animals. Hundreds of cats and dogs. I was 16!

I do TNR and I do not let cats suffer. If a feral cat comes in needed intense vet care with a prolonged recovery time I wont do it. They will be put to sleep because it is hell for them to be put through recovery to only be released again. Blood test is as far as I will go. If the cat is on the younger side and has promising social skills I will tame them. People hate it but people dont see the suffering that goes on behind vet care for ferals. I have fallen out with vets for unnessesary testing without getting my permission first.

I think all shelters should be "kill shelters" keeping an animal in shelter conditioners for (being VERY generous) more than 3 months is insanely inhumane to me.

Also hot take but breeding (especially dogs) is also not the enemy when its ethical! Backyard breeding is part of the reason why so many animals go to shelters!

Yes! I use to think bad about kill shelters until I started TNR. Maybe if every so called cat person would help fixed strays we wouldn’t need so many rescues and shelters
