@occupycinematographers: Caleb Deschanel had six Oscar nominations and zero stop-motion films before Laika called him. The cinematographer behind The Lion King and The Passion of the Christ spent years at Laika's studio near Portland on Wildwood. Every frame was posed by hand, lit on real miniature sets and captured one at a time. Travis Knight says the whole project took 16 years from the first conversation with author Colin Meloy.
