@laterellroach: *True* — that's what the new Brookings Metro research found, published Oct. 16, 2026. From the report and coverage of it: - Brookings cross-checked the DOGE website against USAspending de-obligation data from Q2 FY2025 through end of FY2026 and confirmed *1,597 grants and contracts affecting Tribes and Native organizations, totaling $468.7 million* in withdrawn funding - *12.1% vs 8.3%:* Native recipients lost 12.1% of obligated funding under the canceled awards, compared to 8.3% for non-Native recipients - *EPA = more than half:* "The Environmental Protection Agency funded more than half of the canceled awards to Native and Tribal recipients. The Pollution Control and Abatement category accounted for over 61% of the funding DOGE cut in Indian Country." - *State impacts:* "In 12 states, Tribes and Native nations lost more than half of obligated funding under affected awards. In Oregon, the share topped 90%." - Examples you cited are in the report: - *Kotzebue, Alaska — roughly $20 million EPA Community Change award* to build and own two wind turbines - *Chippewa Cree Tribe in Montana — $6 million* to buy reservation land for young farmers - The authors — Robert Maxim, Glencora Haskins, Mary Elizabeth Campbell and Ryan Williams — argue the cuts violate federal trust and treaty obligations and urge Congress to move more Indian Country funding to formula funding and require agencies to reissue grants when cuts are found illegal.
