@andrewtoworld: #stitch with @journey Great video, I wanted to expand further on why certain cycles exist in certain places, citing professor Robert Sapolsky and his findings on poverty and stress. #andrxw1205 #psychology #poverty #middleclass
being poor is expensive and exhausting. the rich can afford to buy time

robert sapolksky has a podcast with his daughter where he answers questions and it's so great, learned so much watching all of them, it's like taking his neuroscience course at stanford!

Airheaded Aviator :
Being poor is overthinking every purchase every moment of the day, but when the burnout reaches boiling point spending too much on something just for desire, and then feeling shame about that purchase due to how much it makes every next purchase harder. Repeat

Emphasis on the SUPPORT for sure. People generally underestimate how much difference having versus not having a solid support system can make when it comes to school, or even family planning. It's definitely factored into a lot of my own decisions.. 😮💨

Grew up with a father who made poor financial decisions. I’m just now learning how to be financially responsible.

forget that most good jobs come through networking and if you don't fit in then you won't be able to network you won't be able to climb the ladder and get a better paying job

As the first and only in my family to go to college (except my daughter), there are so many challenges going from poor to middle class.

To be one of the best ways to frame this is the reinterpretation of the Stanford marshmallow experiment. The original test was about impulse control and later life outcomes. A follow up now shows that environmental signals like how trustworthy the administrator n such are far better predictors. One in the hand is better than two in the bush when the bush is on fire.

you are correctly and compassionately touching on something really important, thanks for fleshing out this topic because this problem can feel so invisible

i always thought i was the poorer relative on one side of the family but it turns out my parents were just the most frugal and had the best credit scores and savings/investments. meanwhile i had relatives who lived more extravagant lives

I feel like it was all for nothing. I'm the only one who went to grad school (fast-tracked all my degrees to my PhD and worked) and still barely can afford food or rent. No gainful employment. No friends. Nothing.

A moment of happiness when you have to struggle is easiest to reach. Long term plans seem like they will never happen for some.

there’s also the idea that sex is a free pleasure & thus why a correlation between children & poverty may be noted, since it is free to have that sex & feel sexual pleasure

Grandma made $15k a year, raised us 3 kids. I got free breakfast and lunch, ate spaghetti every day for dinner since it was cheap. My grandma was convinced by her coworkers and the media that government handouts (like SNAP) were immoral. I didn’t go to a doctor ever, even after being hit by a car in my teenage years (and this happened three years in a row wtf was my luck??). Now, I’m the first to own a house (well at least since my farmer ancestors), the first to have a degree (Computer Science & Mathematics), I got a car at 20 and paid it off at 21. I live frugally. Married with two kids. I am on track to retire very early. I am on track to have my kids be able to retire early too (depends what they do with the money of course). I was able to do this by separating myself from earthly desires. I meditated, exercised, learned, taught, I explored the physical extent of my body, challenged myself mentally. I freed myself from the chains I was bound to. I was then struck by a sickness. I developed anterograde amnesia for 3 years. My discipline disappeared. Now I’m sitting on a toilet at midnight watching TikTok… I will develop once again, and so will you.
