And don’t give boys a crushing amount of responsibility, making your boy a surrogate husband or boyfriend broke me.

Wow this was a stunning articulation. I have a daughter myself, so I am looking at this through that lens but it makes so much sense. And I’m thinking about how to apply it to my conversations with my daughter as well (even though as a mom we have a ton of age appropriate convos about this kind of thing). I feel fortunate that she has her father to look to as an example…but he had to fight for that level of discipline and leadership because he def didn’t have an empowered dynamic as a young boy.

This might be an unpopular opinion but I think the maternal instinct to protect children from hardship can often ruin boys. Fathers/male role models are particularly important because they understand and are better at conveying the following dual message: 1) that the truth is the world is hard, and people primarily attribute value to men based on what they achieve and 2) through hard work and (sometimes painful) effort they can still have a beautiful life.

apologies for the audio on the last one cutting out for 5 mins in the middle. reposted as many requested but this doesn’t seem to be finding those same moms again for them to hear it in its entirety from what I can see.

Definitely this; I think allowing your little boy to do/experience hard things helps build their confidence & resilience once they accomplish that thing. Asking them open ended questions that make them think a little deeper than surface level and even having them question you helps them develop independent thought and critical thinking; whatever you can do to help them realize they’re not hopeless and capable 🙏🏽

my mom was a stay at home and my brother is the baby behind two girls. my brother is extremely self sufficient. my mom purposely DID NOT ALLOW us girls to do chores for him. Us Girls also never baby sat him and my parents hired a sitter when they went out so us girls were never parentified. We had a rotating chore chart and the chores were evenly split between "gendered" chores. When we started middle school age 11 to 12? all of us had to pack our own lunches and start doing our own laundry, including him. Us kids would plan and excute friday dinner on a rotating, weekly basis. by plan and execute, I mean plan a dinner from scratch, give our parents a list of ingredients for them to get from the store and cook it, from scratch. we had the same curfews and privileges and if we acted up, we equally lost privileges. my brother is again, self sufficient. whenever he comes into town to visit, he plans where we're going to go, texts us ahead of time, works around our schedules, rents the car and drives us around (he LOVES driving). he'll even have bottled waters in the car for us. thank GOD Mom wasn't a boy mom

1000% agree. Had to fight with my mom in my late teens and early 20s once I realised what was happening. Kept repeating: "Let me screw this up and learn." I'm still learning, catching up even, but that growth is mine.

I was told not to cry, bc I was the man of the house and I had to be strong for my mom and brothers; I was 8. But it isnt hard to let your kids make some executive decisions. I let my sons choose outfits for the week (with some guidance, obv).

Very insightful. As a son, I just relived these kinds of conversations my mom and I shared. I thank my mom for being aware of how the world is outside of her vigil and preparing me

Add boys who had mothers who did everything for them like their laundry and cooking their meals and washing their dishes boys that have moms that do that and don’t let their sons figure out that they themselves have to do those responsibilities for themselves. Eventually, they go looking for a partner who takes care of them like their mother because doing it themselves is scary or overwhelming

I had to tell my mother at 16 to back off and let me fail. I was being smothered by her constantly and finally had enough. it was hard for her to do but I kept her feet to the fire and im a better man because of it. I wholeheartedly agree with you overall point.
