I got called out to work on this sable after the owner noticed she was limping and had lost a little weight. Once I got her sedated, I started some fluids and began trying to figure out what was causing the lameness. As soon as I examined her feet, I found the problem. She had broken off a significant chunk of her hoof, exposing the sensitive tissue underneath. You can see in the video just how much of the hoof was missing. As you can imagine, putting weight on exposed sensitive tissue like this can be extremely painful. I cleaned the hoof wound thoroughly, gave her medication to help control infection and pain, applied a salve to the exposed tissue, and protected everything with a dissolvable bandage. With injuries like this, treatment is only the beginning. The hoof still needs time to grow and heal, so monitoring her progress is important. Three weeks later, she is looking better. She’s still a little sore and underweight, but so far she seems to be moving in the right direction. Wild animals don’t always make it obvious when something hurts.
