@criscinema: Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything raises some interesting questions about Amanda Seyfried, her portrayal of Elizabeth in The Dropout, and the ethics of dramatizing real-life scandals. While I saw tons of Amanda Seyfried praise after You Can See Everything, I was shocked to see that some people found her to be “self righteous” and claim she didn’t come out of this looking the best. She by far had the most empathy out of anyone in this film and was the only one to any do real self-reflection on her actions and how they affected people (despite doing nothing wrong in her job as an actress). I think some people are severely misreading Amanda’s reaction to Elizabeth’s criticism just because she got a little flustered. While there’s a bigger conversation we could have as to whether all biopics or series/novels based on real life figures are exploitative in some way, you can’t put that all on Amanda, and based on Elizabeth’s insistence she did nothing wrong, there is NO version of the Theranos story you could put to screen that she wouldn’t claim was untrue. Let me know what YOU thought of Amanda’s role in YCSE!#YouCanSeeEverything #ElizabethHolmes #TheDropout #AmandaSeyfried #filmtok
She had the SANEST takes the entire time. And her final little back and forth with Nathan is the cherry on top

Seyfried is portraying Elizabeth much like Billy was posting as Elizabeth on X. They both controlled the narrative and character of Elizabeth in their own way, which was fascinating but not objectively moral either in my view.

Okay anyone describing Amanda’s portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes as harsh is out of their mind. I remember watching the dropout at the time thinking DAMN they really humanized this monster.

I think the point is it isn’t black or white. Amanda can feel sympathetic/guilty/defensive for the direct consequences of her portrayal of Elizabeth in “The Dropout” while also offering her own objective observation around how manipulative Elizabeth actually is.

I don’t think anyone’s hands are clean but Amanda’s might be the cleanest. But when she justified her portrayal of Elizabeth and saying she brought it upon herself, it immediately made me think of Billy’s comments about throwing Elizabeth in the world of AI when he said “someone’s gonna do it”. It’s to a much smaller degree but Amanda does have some accountability for Elizabeth’s experience.

amanda was able to balance having empathy while still holding Elizabeth accountable for what she did and it seems a lot of people cannot grasp that empathy doesn’t have to negate accountability

Amanda played her that way on TV because that was the script. That was the director and that was what they wanted her to portray.

I think she is intentionally the only one being logical in the situation, but she was the one being ostracized for those views because Nathan had been “fooled”

the part that i had a problem with amanda was the exchange between her and nathan while feeding the horses. nathan was worried about her accuracy in acting as elizabeth and amanda wanted to be seen as convincing. to me, amanda was still treating this as a work of fiction. nathan fielder a was definitely emotionally compromised but amanda still had personal interests with this documentary. i think that’s what’s so genius about this film. nobody can be trusted.

she was easily the best part, I thought she was going to be in it briefly, I was so happy when she was in it for nearly the entire second half

I felt like Amanda is not even relevant but they tried to make her important. She is just an actress and never even met her in person. She kind of had me not liking her because she tried to protect herself for her portrayal of Elizabeth.

I left the film thinking that the duality of Amanda’s responses and reactions were kind of revealing the point. We are all performers and represent truth in our own way, and we all work really hard to reframe our personal narratives: our actions are good and the truth is what we define it as— therefore there is no one truth. This is reinforced through Liz’s inability to accept responsibility, Seyfried’s shaping of her work as both fact and fiction, and ultimately Nathan revealing that the whole story he told should be called into question when we see him swimming with her.

Seems like the answer is maybe we stop creating fictionalized depictions of real people and events that are recent enough for people affected by it to still be alive. Lifetime started such a diabolical trend

I felt like she represented the audience, so many of the things she clocked were things that I questioned but second guessed if it was actually noteworthy or if I was just overthinking, like the egg scene.
