If i'm buying cupcakes for my son's birthday for the whole class , I expect the whole class to at least get one cupcake. the money didn't come from you.The money came from the parent.

I am a retired teacher. Considering that a parent bought it for the class, I would give every child a cupcake. There are other ways to enforce discipline.

Every. Kid. It’s not a reward. It’s a birthday celebration.

Yall right FOOD isn't a punishment..a dessert/treat is a reward Rewarding bad behavior just because "the teacher didn't buy it" is wild. It is still their classroom. Just tell the parent hey some are left so I'm sending em home

The “food shouldn’t be punishment” comments are killing me.. you didn’t deny them lunch.. you denied them something extra for being bad. I don’t see anything wrong as a parent who takes treats to the school all the time! Heck, one time I told the teacher to skip MY son as she was passing out a treat I brought cause he was acting up.

You’re not wrong…look at these comments and you’ll start to understand why there’s a clear rise in the unruly behavior that goes on in school

Why reward a child for being bad? As a former teacher, I twould have sent the cupcake back home with the birthday child.

my mom brought chocolate covered strawberries for my class for my birthday and my teacher wouldn't let me have one for talking. I will forever remember that. if it's not something you bought for the class then I don't think you should be allowed to make that call. that's just me though.

You lost me at it was a student’s birthday. If this was a reward for your class just in general from you then OK, but those cupcakes were not from you so that does not make it fair for you to decide who gets a cupcake and who does not sorry.

A birthday celebration outside of school is not the same as any type of celebration at school. Respect the expectations of the teacher at school.

As a teacher, I would clearly tell the students in the morning that if they behave, they will get a cupcake at the end of the day. If they misbehave, no cupcake. This way, everyone knows the expectations. If they choose not to conform, there are consequences. Dessert is not mandatory btw. Misbehaving kids will live sans a cupcake.

In all my 20 years of teaching I would never not give a cupcake to everyone. You should already have your rewards/behavior system established. This is an example of public humiliation.

As a retired behavioral specialist for SPED. I’ve been spat in the face, punched in the stomach and so forth. I don’t care who bought it. Sweets are a reward. It’s not mandated by the state. If you don’t want to reward poor behavior. Then don’t. That’s your room. You did right. Point, blank, period.

Veteran teacher here. You don’t use food as a punishment. You give the entire class what was brought in for the entire class . You use something else for punishment.

I’d have been afraid to tell my parents I didn’t get one because they would have made me tell them why. 😂

After reading these responses, we now know why kids don't behave anymore! Hell no, if the kid doesn't behave, s/he isn't going to be given TREATS!
