Putin asked him to sit down. But the schoolboy stayed standing — and seconds later explained why. The moment took place on April 30, 2025, during the “Knowledge.First” marathon in Moscow. Thirteen-year-old Nikita Gogolev from Pyatigorsk spoke in front of Vladimir Putin and recited his own poem dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory Day. After finishing, Nikita admitted that meeting the president had been a longtime dream of his. Putin thanked him and said: “Please, sit down.” But Nikita remained standing. Then he immediately explained why: “I was born and raised in the Caucasus. Where we come from, when elders speak, younger people stand.” That single sentence completely changed the meaning of the moment. It was not a refusal meant to challenge anyone. Nikita explained that his behavior came from a tradition of showing respect to elders that he had grown up with. Putin listened and responded that the traditions of the Caucasus are treated with great respect. The conversation then continued about Nikita himself, his age and his poem. The entire exchange lasted only a short time, but that explanation became the most memorable part of the scene. Sometimes one simple gesture carries far more meaning than it first appears.
