So a friend of mine wants to get a little freaky with an AI. Specifically, he wants an uncensored model he can run on his own computer. No filters, no, "I'm sorry, I can't help with that." And it actually made me curious, because I didn't know, how do people actually strip the guardrails off of these models? Now, it turns out there is an open source tool for this called Heretic, and honestly, the way it works is really cool, and once you hear it, it just makes a lot of sense if you know anything about these models. Now, when an AI refuses you, that refusal isn't some rule book in the code. It's actually a direction inside the model's neural network. Now to find it, the tool feeds the model a bunch of prompts it would normally refuse, and then it watches what happens inside, then compares that to normal prompts. The difference is the refusal direction, and then it just removes it, and they call this process abliteration. Now, this is all fully automatic. You run one command, and depending on the size of the model, it can take as little as an hour on a regular gaming GPU. It tunes itself to kill the refusals while keeping the model almost as smart as it was before. So you don't have to do any retraining, and you do not have to have a PhD to do this. Now, is this legal? Mostly, yeah. Now keep in mind, I am obviously not a lawyer, but editing a model you downloaded and that you run yourself isn't a crime. The catch is two things. It can break the model's license, and whatever you generate with it, of course, is still on you. Uncensoring it is legal. Using it to make actually illegal stuff is very much not. Now, I may actually try this soon, and I'm definitely going to reach out to my friend to see how it went for him, although I don't really want to know what he's up to. But let me know if you guys decide to do this. I'd be very curious if you do.
