Kinda Interesting Things #366: Krasner and Pollock: Past Continuous, A New Exhibit at @The Met If you’re walking through The Met, you’ll come across this painting. This is The Seasons by Lee Krasner, painted in 1957, just one year after the death of her husband, Jackson Pollock. Its title evokes cycles and change, and the painting was made at a time when Krasner’s own life had been completely transformed. It was one of the most ambitious paintings she had made up to that point. While Pollock became one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, Krasner was a painter in her own right, constantly changing, experimenting, and searching for what might come next. “Krasner and Pollock: Past Continuous” brings together more than 120 paintings, works on paper, and other objects, tracing the lives and careers of both artists from the 1930s through the end of their lives. It’s organized into 12 chapters, moving through their early careers, their meeting in 1941, their life together in New York and Long Island, the emergence of Abstract Expressionism, and Krasner’s career in the decades after Pollock’s death. While Pollock’s reputation historically eclipsed Krasner’s, this exhibition asks us to look at her not simply as Pollock’s wife, but as an artist with a career, a voice, and a body of work that continued long after his. Krasner and Pollock: Past Continuous is on view now at The Met.
