Scrubs (2001) was often credited with being an original blend of comedy and drama, the show consistently covered heavy themes like morality, depression and heartbreak whilst still managing to keep a light tone. Season 3 Episode 14: My Screwup is widely considered to be the best example of this and possibly one of the greatest examples of any sitcom covering heavy material. In the episode Dr Cox’s best friend Ben returns after being diagnosed with Leukaemia 2 years prior. Cox gives JD the responsibility of running some tests on Ben while he’s out of the hospital but JD is already stressed about an older patient he has, Dr Cox ensures him by saying “he’s not going to die in the next 30 minutes”. However when Dr Cox does return, JD approaches him and confirms that his patient went into cardiac arrest and died, Dr Cox blames JD for this and begins to spiral into a fit of anger and denial, all the while he is still accompanied by Ben. Eventually Dr Cox and Ben attend what we believe is his sons birthday, but when Dr Cox asks Ben if he’s going to take some pictures, JD asks him a simple question; “Where do you think we are?”. It’s at this point we realise the patient JD was referring to was in fact Ben and that they are actually at his funeral, the episode had been slowly dropping hints the entire time, the biggest one being that Ben never interacts with another character after his death and that he previously stated he will carry his camera around with him until the day he dies. After JD gives Dr Cox the news of Bens passing, Ben can be seen without the camera, a subtle hint at his demise. The episode was critically acclaimed for it’s amazing storytelling and incredible twist and remains the single highest rated episode of Scrubs and one of the highest rated episodes of any sitcom, with some people making the claim that it’s the greatest piece of drama in sitcom history.
