@gardensocialaz: Someone call worldstar, there's been a fight! 💪👊🌸 Today, we're fighting misinformation about Ruella (Mexican Petunia) - not all rhizomatous plants are invasive! In most cases, understanding an appropriate care routine and implementing simple, long-term management techniques are all it takes to rein in the spread and break out the blooms! Mexican Petunia (Ruellia) can be a beautiful, tough landscape plant, but it spreads aggressively through underground rhizomes. Repeatedly hedge-pruning the top may keep it looking tidy for a while, but it does very little to control what is happening beneath the soil — and can encourage the plant to push fresh basal growth. Occasional pruning is perfectly fine for shaping and cleanup, but if your goal is to actually limit its spread, focus less on constant hedging and more on an occasional “reset.” Dig around the outer edge of the clump and cut back or remove wandering rhizomes before they establish new shoots. Think of it as managing the root system instead of constantly chasing the foliage. A good below-ground reset from time to time can keep Mexican Petunia attractive, contained, and much easier to manage long-term. For the team that cares, consider Garden Social! There are seedless varieties that reduce the dual spread capabilities. The seed pods are fun to watch pop open, but them suckers can fly!

Next, let’s talk about Palo Verde. A lot of people say they’re too weak, they lose limbs in every storm, they fall over in monsoon winds, & are more trouble than they’re worth. What would you suggest?

@Garden Social I have 2 potted ones that seems to be sprawling down and out. Should I tie them up to prevent the drooping? Do I need to trim them?
