That’s $24,000 a year and $120,000 over five years, assuming your rent never increases. At the end of those five years, you don’t own a share of the property you live in. Meanwhile, your landlord may be paying down a mortgage, building equity, and benefiting from any increase in the property’s value. But does that automatically mean renting is a bad financial decision? Absolutely not. Homeownership comes with mortgage interest, property taxes, insurance, maintenance, repairs, closing costs, and sometimes HOA fees. Buying a house does not automatically make you wealthy, and the money you put into a home is not always easy to access. Renting can make financial sense, especially if buying would stretch your finances too far or if you can invest the difference and build wealth elsewhere. The real question is not simply whether you are paying rent or a mortgage. It’s this: Which option leaves you in a stronger financial position over time? Don’t buy a house just because you are tired of paying rent. And don’t assume renting is throwing money away just because you aren’t building home equity. Run the numbers. Consider your plans, compare the total costs, and make a decision based on your financial reality, not pressure from society.
