As a mom who is a child development expert and worked in speech therapy my son was screen free for 18 months, but I’ve slowly started to integrate screen time to my toddler and here are some of my non negotiables! 📺 1. Screen time is limited to big screens or stationary screens like our google home. IPad’s are only limited to flights and travel and we try our best to not let him watch it on our phones! 2. I try to watch shows with him as best I can and narrate and point out the lessons in the show! Obviously this isn’t always possible if I need to cook or get work done but I try to put on shows with nursery rhymes or music so I can sing along as I cook! The main reason screen time isn’t recommended at a young age is because there isn’t enough opportunity to have a verbal exchange and grow a child’s language development! So now that my son’s language is where I want it to be I’m ok with allowing screens! 3. Limit screen time to 20-30 mins a day- I try my best to limit it to 1 episode at a time! 4. No screen time within 30-60 minutes before bed/naptime! This is because we want to wind down their bodies naturally without any stimulation! 5. Lastly and most important for me is no screen time during meals! Snacks are totally fine but a child needs to be able to engage and explore their food and make that eye, mind and body connection with their food to create healthy habits so we allow nursery rhymes but no screens during our 3 big meals! Each persons experience with screens is so different but I’m adoring these low stimulation shows for now, and it’s so fun watching him love the shows I grew up with! In a world full of technology and screens it’s so important to be mindful of what we expose our children to at such a vulnerable age! #lowstimulation #lowstimulatingshows #toddler #tvshows #screentime
