As someone who works in a very conservative field, one where arrogance can practically be a part of the dress code, I admire those who achieved mastery without losing their sense of joy and ability to have fun! The classical music world, much like the legal world, can be very judgmental and conservative, too. Which is why I adore David. Yes, he could absolutely play my soul on a violin. But look at him—he’ll turn around and play Despacito with the same level of skill and he enjoys every bit of it. Wearing a colorful hoodie while holding a violin—love love love that “take your craft—but not yourself—too seriously” energy! Classical music would have remained completely inaccessible to me if it wasn’t for David (or Il Volo). Paganini, Rachmaninoff, and Mozart would’ve never made it into my playlist. All of them would have stayed behind a velvet rope labeled “for the old and boring people only.” But David bridged that gap for me by making elevated music digestible and by blessing the simplicity of popular music with his skills.
