@richallen22: Songwriting is a way of listening to the parts of ourselves we haven’t yet learned how to say aloud. Sometimes a song begins with a question, not an answer: Where have I been? What have I carried? And how do I know whether I’m finally where I belong? “Shadows and Stones” looks back because the past is never entirely past. Our failures, old hurts, and choices travel with us—not as a sentence, but as a history we can learn from. We can’t rewrite what happened, and we shouldn’t pretend it left no mark. But we can meet it honestly, forgive ourselves, and choose what we do next. To love someone is not to arrive without shadows. It is to be willing to stand beside another person with your history in view—and still make a commitment to the future. The song wonders whether love can become a home: not a place without uncertainty, but a place where two people keep choosing to stay, grow, and begin again. Maybe the past can’t speak for us.
