@mothershipsg: Shopkeepers in France have been defending their businesses against looters after nationwide protests descended into violence on Oct. 17. According to the BBC, an estimated 2,000 businesses were affected by the unrest, which saw shops looted and public buildings attacked. The protests, sparked by rising living costs and concerns over school conditions, also saw masked groups setting fires and damaging buildings, AP News reported. French president Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence, saying those responsible for looting would have to “pay for the damage” caused. He also blamed radical far-left groups for much of the unrest and instructed authorities to strengthen protection for businesses and public buildings. Following the riots, overnight curfews were announced in parts of France, including central Paris, Lyon and Lille, according to the BBC.
