As miraculous as it is to bring new life into the world, expectant mothers put their bodies through the ultimate test of resilience. And some pregnancies experienced in the natural world go beyond difficult, becoming truly horrifying. Sand tiger sharks are the epitome of “survival of the fittest” - and the fittest is determined before the babies are even born. They’re also known as grey nurses, but there’s nothing nurturing about the way they bring their babies into the world. The mother has two uteri, within which multiple embryos develop, but the one that grows the quickest will attack and eat its younger siblings. The sole survivor from each uterus gets to be born live. Less gruesome but no less strange is what goes on during kangaroo pregnancies. Or rather, what doesn’t go on. A kangaroo mother can put her pregnancy on pause, halting the growth of her joey in a process called embryonic diapause. This can happen during times of hardship or if she’s already nursing an older joey, but when conditions improve, the mother resumes the embryo's development, picking up where it left off. One of the weirdest and most rarely seen animals on the planet is the frilled shark. Named for its frilly gills, this freaky fish lives in water more than a kilometre deep in perpetual darkness. Being so elusive, little is known about this unusual animal, but what we do know is that it has one of the longest gestation periods in the animal kingdom, staying pregnant for a whopping 3.5 years. Photo by Kelvin Aitken/Marine Themes While a kiwi is only about the size of a chicken, it has the largest egg compared to its body size of any bird. One egg takes up a massive 20% of the kiwi’s weight, so massive that it squishes her internal organs aside just to fit. With her stomach and lungs being crushed, she rarely eats and even experiences difficulty breathing during her pregnancy, and that’s all before she has to squeeze the thing out. Photo by Florian Bäthge An alpine salamander’s gestation period can go for 2 or even 3 years. That’s a long time for the embryo to be stuck inside, and they’ll need nutrients. So naturally they turn to their siblings in the womb with them. The embryos absorb the eggs surrounding them, gaining the nourishment they need to wait out their mother's incredibly long pregnancy. Ready for even weirder stories from the animal kingdom? Ones that make you think “that can’t possibly be real”? I’ll bring you every detail. Follow for more fascinating wildlife content and prepare to enter the wild and see nature like you never have before. #AnimalFacts #DidYouKnow #weirdfacts #interestingfacts #wildlifefacts
