It is said that before the battle of badr Allah promised the Muslims that one of two groups would fall into their hands: either the Quraysh trading caravan led by Abū Sufyān, carrying valuable merchandise, or the armed Quraysh army that had come from Makkah. The Muslims preferred the caravan because it was lightly defended and would provide wealth without a major battle. However, Allah intended for them to confront the armed army instead, establishing the truth and defeating the power of the disbelievers. Fighting the caravan was justified since it was fighting a caravan of quraysh - the tribe which persecuted, bullied, boycotted, killed and chased out the Muslims. However instead the Muslims fought the quraysh army at badr and won a decisive victory over them.
