@melissaskavinska: What interests me about watching Lala Kramarenko now is how differently I experience her gymnastics. Looking at her younger training footage, I notice the foundations: the control, flexibility and precision she was building. Watching her concert performances, those qualities are still there, but my attention goes towards how she uses them to interpret the music. For me, there’s a mature, feminine and classical quality to her performance. I notice the way she carries her arms, holds a position and finishes a phrase. The movement has character, and I find myself following her expression as much as the difficulty. That’s something I’d love to see more space for in rhythmic gymnastics: watching an athlete’s interpretation develop over time. Younger gymnasts can be wonderfully expressive too. But experience gives an athlete more opportunities to explore what feels natural to them, which music they connect with and how they want to perform. I find that development just as interesting as learning a harder skill. With Lala, I feel I’m seeing another chapter of her gymnastics. Her concert performances give me a reason to keep watching beyond competition results, and I think that deserves attention in its own right. What do you notice most when you watch her now? I’m Melisa, founder of Inside Artistic Sports. I explore the stories and development behind rhythmic gymnastics and figure skating.
