My brother missed my wedding, and all he sent was a single $20 bill in an envelope. I was furious. “I paid $1,200 for your flight.” “I know.” “I bought it three months early.” “I know.” “You didn’t even show up.” “I know.” “What was so important?” “I’m not saying.” I was 29. My wedding was in June. My brother and I weren’t close, but he was my only sibling. Our dad had passed away four years before. I wanted him standing next to me. So I bought his ticket early because he never planned anything. I called him every month to remind him. “I’ll be there.” “Promise?” “I promise.” The night before the wedding, my phone buzzed. “Can’t make it. Sorry.” That was the whole message. I called him eleven times. He never picked up. The next day, I walked down the aisle. The seat in the front row stayed empty. My mom kept glancing at it. I smiled in every photo anyway. Two days after the honeymoon, an envelope arrived. Inside was one crisp $20 bill. A sticky note said, “Buy yourself a dance.” I laughed, but not in a good way. That night I called my best friend. “$1,200 for his flight, and I get $20.” “Maybe it’s a joke.” “It’s not funny.” “Is he okay?” “He’s fine. He’s just selfish.” “Have you talked to him?” “No. And I’m not going to.” I blocked his number. Eight months went by. No calls. No texts. Not even on my birthday. I put the $20 in a drawer and tried to forget about it. Then, in February, my mom came to visit. She was washing dishes in my kitchen when she said it. “You should call your brother.” “Why?” “Just call him.” “He didn’t even come to my wedding, Mom.” She turned off the water. “Do you know why?” “Because he didn’t care.” “He worked a double that day.” “So?” “It paid triple. If he’d skipped it, he would’ve lost the job.” “He could’ve found another one.” “Not one that paid enough.” “Enough for what?” She dried her hands slowly. “When your father died, he left debt.” “What debt?” “$38,000. Hospital bills, mostly. I didn’t tell you. You were just starting your life.” My stomach dropped. “Who’s been paying it?” She didn’t answer. She didn’t have to. I unblocked his number that night and called. “Mom told me.” “She wasn’t supposed to.” “Why didn’t you say anything?” “You’d have tried to help.” “Of course I would.” “You were so happy. I didn’t want to ruin that.” “What about the $20?” “That was Dad’s.” “What do you mean?” “The one from his wallet. The one he told us never to spend.” I remembered. At the hospital, he’d pressed a $20 bill into each of our hands. “Keep it for a day you really need it.” I’d spent mine years ago, on gas, and felt guilty ever since. “You gave me yours.” “I figured your wedding was that day.” “How much have you paid off?” “I’m not saying.” “Tell me.” “If I tell you, you’ll compare it to the flight.” That’s when I cried. I was the one who had compared. “I’m sorry.” “For what?” “I called you selfish.” “You did say that.” “You heard?” “Mom told me. She said you were mad for months.” He laughed quietly. “I’d have been mad too.” Mom told me later he’d been eating rice and eggs for two years. The last payment went through in April. He came to visit that Christmas. He didn’t bring a gift. I didn’t ask for one. I just handed him the $20 from my drawer. “Buy yourself a dance.” He laughed so hard he had to sit down. #creatorseachinsight #fyppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp
