In 1833, Britain used 40% of its national budget to buy freedom for enslaved people across the Empire. Britain borrowed such a large sum of money to fund the Slavery Abolition Act that the debt wasn't fully paid off until 2015. This means that British citizens helped pay for the abolition of slavery through their taxes, taking 182 years to pay off the debt. Not to mention the 17,000 Britons who lost their lives fighting to end slavery.
